Richard S. Surwit, Ph.D, received his doctorate in clinical Psychology from McGill University. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School where he later served as Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology (FAClinPsy). Dr. Surwit is currently Professor and Chief of the Division of Medical Psychology, Vice Chairman in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and co-director of the Behavioral Endocrinology Clinic at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Surwit is recognized as a world renowned authority on stress and health. He has extensively studied the role that emotions and personality play in blood sugar control, as well as the basic biological mechanisms of obesity and type 2 diabetes. He is past-president of the Society for Behavioral Medicine and is the recipient of a Research Scientist Award from the National Institute of Mental Health as well as Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Behavioral Medicine, and the Academy for Behavioral Medicine Research. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years, and he has published over 100 articles in leading scientific journals. Dr. Surwit has appeared on national television shows such as Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Fox News and CNN. He has authored and edited four books including the forthcoming Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution, to be published by The Free Press early in 2004. |
